About us
The University of Dohuk was established on October 31, 1992. During this time the Ba’ath Party had Iraqi universities deny admittance to Kurdish students. The facilities at Salahaddin University in Erbil were insufficient to accommodate all Kurdish students wishing to continue their studies. The economic situation also made transportation between Erbil and Dohuk difficult, especially in the winter season.
Therefore, the parliament of Iraqi Kurdistan issued a decree to establish a university in Dohuk city. The first colleges created at the university were the College of Medicine and the College of Agriculture. The Medical College had 48 students and the College of Agriculture had 166. Embargos imposed by the UN on Iraq and the Iraqi Central Government embargos on Kurdistan contributed to poor economic conditions in Kurdistan. After these hard times passed, the university found itself in a position for advancement and expanded to 11 colleges, each with specialized departments.
The aim of external relations and international cooperation is to pursue global recruitment of faculty and students, international research collaborations, institutional alliances and consortia, student exchange programs, distant learning programs, executive education programs, and reciprocation of education technology.
The University of Dohuk believes that cooperation is essential for rapid progress of worldwide information connectivity and growing international educational integration. Our University wants to forge strong relation with distinguished and outstanding universities and scientific centers through bilateral agreements and exchange programs.
As an institution of higher learning the University of Dohuk aims to reach the highest levels of scientific research and education. The university has a mission to supply an educated populace to the public and private sectors while conducting value added research. The university depends principally on assistance provided by the government but is considered an independent organization.
