The College of Education is not only one of the largest colleges in the university but one of the most recognized in the country and, as such, offers one of the most stimulating and challenging environments to study in. The large size of the college allows for unparalleled opportunities for graduate study and the diversity and breadth of interest is represented by the 10 departments that make up the College of Education. The dominant languages – Kurdish, Arabic and English – are studied in depth.
The need for secondary teachers in Dohuk province encouraged the development of the College of Education in 2002. Because of this shortage, the College of Science studies' program was suspended and the college staff was transferred to the College of Education. The students were then admitted to the College of Education to continue their study as students of the College of Science. In 2006, the College of Science was reinstated as a separate college from the College of Education while the College of Education remains thriving.
Although organized on a departmental basis, graduate study within the college is not confined to disciplinary boundaries. True to its founding purpose, the faculty encourages interdisciplinary activity and recognizes that much innovative work has derived from intellectual stimulus of multidisciplinary study. This crosses not only departmental boundaries but also extends to collaboration with other faculties.
The college offers B.E.d. according to specialization for undergraduate study. A one year PGD and M.Ed. is offered for graduate study in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology. The college also offers a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Animal Physiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Plant Physiology, Theoretical Physics, Biophysics, and Environmental Biology.
The college seeks to train well-qualified intermediate and secondary school teachers in the most modern teaching methods by developing their ability to access information and increasing their knowledge of the physical, chemical, natural, social, and humanitarian sciences. The College is keen on training professionals of the highest standard to act as tomorrow's computer scientists, translators, linguist, and historians who can educate the countries young, and prepare them for a future of certainty and possibilities in the new global world.
