After the uprising of 1991 in the Iraqi Province of Kurdistan, it became essential to establish a medical school that provides well trained doctors to serve the community. The mission also aimed at activating health projects, commencing research, and improving health services in the community. The college follows a hospital-based community-oriented program using English as its language of study. The college is now registered and accredited by the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom and by the E.C.F.M.G of the United States of America.
The College of Medicine has fully authorized access to the following facilities:
- Azadi General Hospital, 450 beds
- Heevi Hospital for Children, 150 beds
- Dohuk Accident and Emergency Hospital, 150 beds
A number of other medical centers have links with the college.
The college endeavors to supply the community with doctors and specialists and to offer the best possible health service. It also aims to extend the skills of those who will be the future teachers and scientists in universities and institution and to develop community services. We aim to prepare highly skilled doctors who can contribute to human health care through working in hospitals and private clinics.
The college offers a six-year, full-time course of study leading to the MBchB in medicine and general surgery. A two year PGD is offered for graduate study in the fields of Biophysics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Medical Physiology, and Medicine.
