The governor of Dohuk city, Mr. Tamar Ramadan, accompanied with the Head of the Governorate Council, Dr. Fadel Omar, made a visit to the University of Dohuk (UoD) on March 30, 2008. The governor discussed with Dr. Asmat M. Khalid, UoD President, possibilities for better cooperation between the university and the governorate. They also discussed the means by which the governorate can benefit from the scientific experiences and innovations of the university in construction modern infrastructure for Dohuk city. Dr. Asmat briefly reviewed the current situation and the problem facing the running process of UoD. He mentioned the current dilemma facing the UoD due to the over enrollment of students from the Kurdistan region and other parts of Iraq especially in finding accommodations for them. He stressed the urgency of this dilemma as one requiring the most consideration.
The University of Dohuk is witnessing steady growth of international relations, especially since it has been considered as a partner in the European scholarships program, Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window. This process will positively reflect on the university and on the Dohuk city as well. Through this program, UoD students have already started to pursue their Master and Doctorate degrees in various specializations in addition to several Post-Doctorate projects and academic staff visits to European partner universities. Dr. Asmat said that the university needs the governorate's support in order to increase and speed up the progress undertaking at UoD, especially after opening the Higher Institute for Planning, regarded the first planning institute in Kurdistan region.
Mr. Ramadan stated that the governorate administration is continuing its coordination and cooperation with the university. He also assured the government subsidization for important projects currently under way, such as the Dohuk water- and students' housing projects. The meeting ended with the UoD president's affirmation of the university plans for new reconstruction projects in the city. |
