The Higher Institute of Planning has been established in the University of Dohuk. The institute will accept postgraduate students next February. The aim of the institute is to produce qualified graduates in the field of integrated planning. The studies are towards a Higher Diploma and M.Sc. in Planning. The program will expand later to include the degree of Ph.D.
Prof. Dr. Nazar M. Numan, Head of the Planning Department for the Institute, said that the plan set for the institute will include students from various fields of Engineering, Agriculture, Science, Administration & Economics and Sociology. At the beginning, the institute will admit ten students for a Diploma program and a similar number for Masters degree. Concerning the doctorate degree, Dr. Nazar said, "We will wait until we have built our capacity of specialized teaching staff before starting the Ph.D program."
English will be the language of instruction at the institute. The curriculum will be composed of core course modules which will introduce students to an introduction to planning concepts, planning philosophy and planning tools and methodologies, followed by two modules, one for the students with humanities backgrounds and the other for those with scientific backgrounds. A research project is to follow for the diploma dissertation and the M.Sc. thesis. The students enrolling in these programs are to take a course in English language and scientific writing prior to the start of their studies.
